In this course, you will be introduced the role that performing and visual arts have within an early childhood curriculum. Implicit within the arts is the place of literature, oratory and storytelling techniques that help to develop early literacy and biliteracy learning for children. By exploring each of these theoretical perspectives, teaching strategies and content knowledge you will learn how to support children’s creativity while they are learning.

In this course, you will develop your research skills and methods of data gathering, in the light of current assessment approaches and practices. You will explore cultural understandings that underpin Kaupapa Māori and Pacific approaches to research involving children from Māori and Pacific families. Models of reflective practice based on contemporary New Zealand research in early childhood settings will enhance your ability to be an early childhood teacher.
